PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYMENT
Professor,
Director, Developmental Reading Program
Department of Curriculum and Instruction
Texas State University-San Marcos - 1989 to present
(Granted tenure and promoted to Professor, Aug. 1992)As a Professor of Reading and Director of the Developmental Reading Program, I have been responsible for creating and directing a developmental program for students who fail the Texas Success Initiative Program reading examination. In this position, I have had the opportunity for research and evaluation into the question of how secondary and post-secondary students can best achieve success in college reading. I have received external and internal grant funding to support this research. In the exploration of how to support these students, I have integrated technology as a learning tool, developed reading strategies, and conducted research. I have disseminated this research in journals, books, as well as at local, state, and national conferences. This scholarship has been used to strengthen my teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses in developmental reading, secondary reading education, educational technology, as well as a doctoral program in Adult, Professional, and Continuing Education and a proposed doctorate in Developmental Education.

In addition, I was responsible for teaching a methods course in content area reading, developing and teaching a methods course on the use of microcomputers in the teaching of reading, and developing and teaching a computer literacy course for all preservice teachers. Furthermore, I received grant funding through the Colorado Consortium of State Colleges for providing a workshop for our faculty on the creation and development of educational courseware for college students; grant funding through the Metropolitan State College Professional Development Fund for the creation of a computer tutorial template for developing software, for the integration of computer assisted instruction into our Level I-General Studies courses, and for the development of a computer tutorial program on SQ3R. Finally, I was responsible for advising over 50 preservice teacher education majors, for Chairing a Search Committee for a new faculty position in the Reading Department, for representing the Reading Department on division-wide committees for Merit Pay, Faculty Evaluation, Summer Brochure, and Computer Based Teacher Education, and for representing the School of Professional Studies on college-wide committees for Retention, General Studies, Assessment, Computer Based Coordinated Student Service (on which I created microcomputer based management system for high risk students), the Facilities Task Force for the North Central Accreditation Self-Study, the Instructional Automated Data Processing committee, and the Search Committee for the Dean of the School of Professional Studies.
As the Director of the Reading Lab, I was responsible for administering eight lab assistants in the day-to-day functioning of a developmental reading lab as well as an elementary and secondary reading materials center, for ordering and monitoring lab instructional materials, equipment, microcomputers, and supplies, as well as for developing courseware for use in both our reading methods classes and our developmental reading and study strategy courses
