E-mail Discussion Groups

This is a list of useful discussion groups for developmental educators. To join these discussion groups, you send a message to a computer program (either Majordomo or Listserv). To join a group that uses the LISTSERV server, follow these directions. Note this first example is to subscribe to the LRNASST discussion group, an excellent discussion group on learning assistance at the college level.

To join you send an e-mail message to the LISTSERV program (which also happens to be the name of the computer at the University of Arizona). In the Subject: line, leave it blank, since the computer program doesn't recognize a message anyway. Then, in the body of the message, simply enter the SUBSCRIBE command (upper or lower case) followed by your first name and your last name. The computer program recognizes your e-mail address from the header in your message. In a few hours or a few days, you will receive a message that you are subscribed and directions for using the discussion group. Keep these for future reference. Especially the DIGEST function which allows you to receive only one message containing a reference to all the messages for that day.

For example, if I wanted to subscribe to the LRNASST group, I would send the following e-mail message. Note the commands are specific to my Digital VAX mainframe on my campus. Your mail system may work differently.
$: mail
MAIL>: send
TO: IN%"listserv@listserv.arizona.edu"
(note no spaces in the address)
SUBJ:
(press return, no subject line is necessary)
subscribe LRNASST David Caverly
cnt-z
(zend off the message by pressing control-z at the same time)

Now when I want to UNSUBSCRIBE, I have to send a message to the same computer program, LISTSERV, telling it I want to unsubscribe to the discussion group. For example, I would send this message to unsubscribe to the LRNASST group:
$: mail
MAIL>: send
TO: IN%"listserv@listserv.arizona.edu"
(note no spaces in the address)
SUBJ:
(press return, no subject line is necessary)
unsubscribe
(note this is all the message in the body)
cnt-z (zend off the message by pressing control-z at the same time)

You can search the archives of LRNASST by going to LRNASST Archives.

LISTPROC discussion groups are very similar to LISTSERVs. You subscribe using the same procedure, sending an e-mail message to a computer program named LISTPROC and subscribing in the same way as the LISTSERV.

To join a group that uses the Majordomo server, follow these directions. While they are like the LISTSERV, they are slightly different.

For example, to join an Community College ESL discussion group, I would:
$: mail
MAIL>: send
TO: IN%"majordomo@hcc.hawaii.edu"
(note no spaces in the address)
SUBJ:
(press return, no subject line is necessary)
subscribe ESLCC
(where "ESLCC" is the desired list, note no name)
cnt-z
(zend off the message by pressing control-z at the same time)

Most other discussion groups will send you subscription procedures.

Discussion Groups

Useful sources for finding discussion groups are:

Dr. E's Eclectic Compendium of Electronic Resources for Adult/Distance Education
Or check out Catalist another collection of discussion groups.
Or check out Liszt which have over 65,000 discussion groups.

Those discussion groups I have found useful include these below. Caution is warranted, however, as these subscription addresses change regularly.
