Service Project: Tutoring High School Students
All undergraduate and graduate education students are cordially invited to participate in a personally rewarding service project sponsored by Kappa Delta Pi.
The Simon Foundation, which collaborates with local school districts to run alternative high schools, has asked our Kappa Delta Pi chapter to complete a service project this fall and spring at their campus in San Antonio. Specifically, the school would like for our KDP members to tutor their students in the areas of math and science. Ideally, we hope that our members can work with their students for one hour once a week. It's okay to tutor just one time during the year. Also, our KDP members do not need to prepare in advance because they can access the online curriculum once they arrive at the school.
Who: Kappa Delta Pi members and any interested student
What: Tutor high school students in math and science
When: For one hour at any time between 8 am and 4 pm on Mondays through Fridays between now and the first week in December
Where: Simon Foundation / Judson Learning Academy – located at 6909 North Loop 1604, East Suite 2010 (inside Rolling Oaks Shopping Mall)
Why: Helping with this project is beneficial in several ways:
- Knowing that you helped a struggling high school student
- Learning about an alternative high school and the ways students learn in alternative settings
- Learning about the math / science curriculum that is used in an alternative high school.
- Adding more service components to your resume.
- Earn two chapter participation points for each tutoring session. Members who earn ten points during the year receive a free membership renewal to KDP. Here is the schoolÕs website. If youÕre interested in participating or would like more information, please email Dr. Bond at NathanBond@txstate.edu . HeÕs creating a master list to give to the principal so that she knows who is coming at the various times.
