This site is for those in college developmental education who orient toward a "whole language" and/or "constructivist" philosophy of teaching reading. It is our hope to include a collection of sources and resources to help futher knowledge development in the field. First, you will find details about the Southwest Texas State University College Developmental Reading Program including those of us who work in the program. You will find a description of our developmental reading course, in which we teach PLAN, a study-reading strategy, use e-mail to help our students talk about books with peers at other institutions around the country, and arrange electronic study groups. You will find a reference to our learning assistance center as well as our graduate program in adult and developmental education.

Second, you will find a Clearinghouse for Whole Language College Reading. Here, it is our hope others can share how they are applying whole language/constructivist notions within their college reading and/or writing programs. Given sample syllabi, lessons, and materials, all of us can grow.

Third, you will find our Technology in Developmental Education homepage. Here, you will find a description of how we use technology in our whole language/constructivist college developmental reading program. There is a Webliography with links to professional organizations, sites oriented toward reading, writing, math, English as a Second Language, study strategies, homepages for learning centers at community colleges, colleges, and universities, and some sites for those of you becoming involved in distance education. There is a listing of software that we recommend, whether you orient yourself from a skills perspective or a whole language perspective. You will find a set of directions for faculty and another for students on how to use the Internet called "Ten Steps to the Internet" covering e-mail, discussion groups, and the World Wide Web. You will find a link to the National Association of Developmental Education Technology Special Interest Group (NADE Technology SPIN). Finally, you will find a bibliography of references for learning more about technology, sites for helping to construct your own homepage, and a listing of discussion groups of interest to developmental educators. Recently, I have added the SWT-TIDE page. Here you can learn about a summer Technology Institute to be held at SWT.

Through sharing what you are doing with us and allowing us to link to your homepage or add your ideas to this homepage, we can all grow. Enjoy.

Cygnus Loop

High speed gas from a supernova explosion slams into dark cooler clouds of interstellar material. Shocked and heated by this tidal wave of energy, the clouds glow in bright, neon-like colors.
